tuesday afternoon brought about something that i have been looking forward to for a couple of months –> csa season!
brad and i didn’t get a csa last year, but i had one the year before that and loved it! i knew we were going to sign up again this year.
we decided to get our csa through wholesome harvest, a farm near fort atkinson, wi. their csa shares are a fairly new venture for the farm – only 6 years old – but they had a convenient pick-up time and location for us and i had a good recommendation.
we decided to start our csa a month early with their spring share, which includes some earlier crops that are sometimes left out of the normal shares.
i was so excited to pick up our box of goodies tuesday afternoon!
see all of those green peeking out?!?
i’m sure my neighbors thought i was a little crazy, but i unpacked my box right on our porch and set out everything on the patio table and starting taking about a million photos of it…

in our first box:
- bok choy
- asparagus
- red leaf lettuce (not sure what it’s actual name is…)
- another type of green lettuce – not sure what kind
- rhubarb
- leeks
- cilantro
guys. i could hardly contain myself!
i immediately started washing and ripping up the red lettuce to make a salad.
in the old salad spinner!
that was a huge head of lettuce. we ended up getting 6 very very big salads out of it! that’s only half of it in the salad spinner. i had to do it in batches!
we also ate the asparagus for dinner that night too. of course. asparagus doesn’t last very long at our house!

i’m guest posting over at badger girl learn to cook today about 3 of my favorite things in the whole world –> farmers markets, csa’s, and gardening!
if you have a second to click on over and show kimberly some love, that would be nice!

daily rambles
i can’t believe it’s already thursday! this week has flown by. i have to finish up a poster on my gardening project today so i can get it printed in time for a symposium on monday. i’ve also got a bit more work to get done on a data analysis that i need to finish by tomorrow, so it’s going to be a busy one!
also, random, but my calves are super sore today and all i did was take the dogs on a long walk yesterday. what is going one?!? i’m probably being paranoid, but i’m all worried that something is wrong. they didn’t hurt at all after monday’s blend 5k. delayed soreness from that?!? grr. i don’t like it.

i am a farmers market addict too – i still absolutely go to the farmers market and pick up things that we didn’t get in our box or things we wanted more of.
or just to people watch.
I would love to do a CSA but I travel at least 2x a month and it makes it hard for Scott to eat all that food. Someday we will do one though!

we got a half share this year, and even that is a lot of food! when i shared a csa with a friend a couple years ago, she went out of town a couple weeks and i got the whole half share to myself. yeah. it’s a LOT of food for one person to eat in a week.
I really want to do a CSA. I’m curently debating between trying to get a share for this summer (and pulling the $$ for it out of my savings accuont) or starting to put aside money each month for a share next year. I’m so torn! (though I know I need to act soon!)

check with your insurance provider if you get a healthy choices reimbursement. it could help pay for some of it! ours paid for over half of our csa – AWESOME!
Sadly, my health insurance sucks, and I don’t. We used to have really awesome wellness focused health insurance and a wellness program at work, but when the company was bought out a couple years ago we lost the wellness program and our insurance switched.

awww, bummer. well i definitely think you should save to get one next year for sure. for us, it ends up saving us money since we don’t buy nearly as much produce at the supermarket every week during csa season. but it IS a large one-time payment. i think some csa’s do have payment plans that you can use to split up the payments over a couple of months…!
I really wanted to sign up for a CSA but my boyfriend doesn’t eat a lot of fruit or veggies, haha. I wasn’t sure if I’d really get my moneys worth on my own. Yours sounds great though!

it helps that brad eats whatever i make.
i’m pretty sure if he was left on his own, the bok choy and lettuce would have gone uneaten this week!
i’ve shared a half share with a friend before and that worked out SO WELL. just an option!
Are you kidding? I totally geek out about vegetables! Great post and thanks for doing a guest post today. Love it!
