what i’ll be doing for the next 2 months…

guys, i have to tell you. i am so excited about today’s post! i’ve been waiting for weeks to talk about one of these things, and the other was a spur of the moment decision yesterday, and i couldn’t be more excited about that either!

first up, i’m running my first race ever!

i am going to run the crazylegs classic on april 28! crazylegs is an 8k, so i found an 8k training plan from hal higdon and am going to follow the novice track to get myself ready!

the training plan started yesterday, but today is my first planned run – 2 miles!

i’ve got my new running shoes and am so ready to break them in.

i don’t really have any goals for this race or training except to avoid injury and to run the whole race. oh yeah, and to have fun!

second thing.. i’m going to bootcamp!

i jumped on the bandwagon yesterday when tina extended the registration for the day. i was tempted immediately when she posted about the bootcamp, but i resisted until yesterday when i decided to join in.

the bootcamp is an 8-week workout program from tina. there are so many people participating and the support is already blowing me away and today is only day 2!!

i’m really excited about bootcamp because it is customizable to fit into your schedule and abilities. i’ve realized that i do much better with my workouts when someone tells me what to do. so, my plan is to do the awesome strength workouts that tina designed on my “stretch & strength” days of my training plan. i will likely do some of her cardio workouts in addition to my runs (especially my short ones), and then once i’m doing longer runs, i’ll substitute them for her cardio workouts. because i can customize the bootcamp, i will be able to participate while still following my training plan!

it’s a win-win.

i took some baseline measurements yesterday so i’ll be able to track my progress as i go through the next couple months of training.

i’ve also started tracking my intake daily. it’s been getting a little out of hand lately, so i have found it really helpful to weigh out portions and be mindful of everything i’m eating.

and since i’m talking about workouts. yesterday, brad and i took the dogs for a long walk around our neighborhood. they loved it and were both happy to get outside and have so much attention.

when we got back, we did a quick workout of abs, push-ups, and planks.

the dogs were all over us. jake put his paw on my face while i was doing crunches and crawled under me during push-ups.

brad was holding a curl up and capone came over and laid his head down right on brad’s stomach!

i guess they thought we were still playing with them!

it was pretty hilarious.

after we managed to get the dogs off of us and finish our workout, we tried a new protein shake!

click generously sent me some of their protein powder to try out. it arrived yesterday before we left for our walk, so it was perfect timing for us to try it!

i’ll do a more formal review soon, but we both really liked it! there are only 120 calories per shake, so we mixed up two shakes – one of the vanilla latte flavor and one mocha flavor. both were delicious. we really liked how much they really tasted like coffee. brad was especially skeptical of them since i mixed them with water instead of milk like he usually does. but they were excellent!

and one more thing to go along with this fitness theme…

because of my involvement with fitfluential, i have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship from refuel with chocolate milk to attend the 2012 fitness & health bloggers conference in denver.

i would love to attend the conference and this post is my application for the scholarship.

today is a pretty normal day. i’ve got work (of course): a seminar and a meeting with my advisor. i have my first training run plus a workout from bootcamp, i have to run a couple errands, and then i’ve got blog stuff and iin work to do tonight!

crazylegs is on my birthday this year.
you would think that i would have planned a trip to madison for celebration and that race! [it's on my must-race-in-my-lifetime list!! along with a half marathon in Lodi. duh.]
i can’t wait to read all about your training and prep for the race!!

you really do need to get on that whole trip to madison thing. please?! i have never been to lodi, but i did go find it on a map and i see it’s just a short jaunt from de forest! i’d love to visit it with a real lodi-ian (??)!

Go Sarah!! Good luck with training for the race and everything else. You’re going to rock, I already know it! I’ve always wanted to do a race. I thought about doing just a 5K to see if I could. I even did the Couch to 5K but then never did a race :P Thing is, I have a bum right ankle and I’m afraid of injury more than anything so I’m just sticking to my workouts and it’s been a good alternative! Did you end up getting separate shoes for outdoor running? They might help with your training! Excited to read about your progress!

i didn’t get separate outside/inside running shoes. my plan is to do most (or all) of my running outside though, so i’ll use my brooks for most of my training!

I hope you make it to the Fitness Bloggers Conference in June! Maybe I’ll have perfected my kombucha by then (still with obsessive checking of your blog posts to make sure I’m doing it right). Or at least have made something that tastes like… well, like kombucha. Good luck with your busy next two months!

It’s going *ok* – the first batch was a little weak. I was afraid to over-brew it! Then I brewed another batch with my monstrous scoby – and proceeded to be mostly out of town for three weeks. I think I made vinegar :/ But scoby is still alive and not moldy, so I’m trying another batch. Fingers crossed!

Congrats on signing up for a race! Hal Higdon training plans are a great way to start training.

I’m doing the bootcamp as well and I thought the first workout was awesome. I’m looking forward to the next 8 weeks. Nice to have you on board!

That’s so great, Sarah!! I actually am contemplating signing up for the Madison Half Marathon the last weekend of May, but I need to make the decision soon as the beginner plan I found for half marathon training is a 12 weeker. I need races like these to have a goal to train for otherwise I fall of the bandwagon!

that’s my exact problem too, emily! i thought about the madison half, but i don’t think that’s enough time for me to train well. i have NO endurance! i’m doing the madison mini marathon in august though!

I LOVE my Brooks running shoes – I got the Brooks Glycerin shoes. They fit my feet perfectly :) Looking forward to being in Bootcamp together!!

i’m nervous/excited! i think it’ll be a great experience! i definitely need some kind of deadline to motivate my training or i’ll just keep running 2-3 miles at a time and never more. not that there’s anything wrong with that, but i want to run more! :)
