week 5

by Sarah Zinkel on July 12, 2012

it’s week 5 of our csa share, which means summer is flying by.

wholesome harvest csa week 5

this is the first week where i felt slightly disappointed with our box. we got good stuff, just not a lot of it.

i should know better than to be disappointed though. it’s been forever since we’ve gotten rain and we’ve had record high temperatures lately. it’s not shocking that the crops are suffering.

this week we received:

  • green beans
  • zucchini
  • tomatoes
  • purple scallions
  • purple basil
  • cabbage
  • mini head of red romaine lettuce

i don’t have much of a plan for the veggies this week. i’m guessing a lot of them will go into a frittata, the green beans will be a side dish at dinner and the cabbage will be chopped up soon for a chinese salad.

…………………………

have you ever seen purple basil? purple scallions?

we grew purple basil at the garden the past couple of years, so i’m used to that, but i had never seen purple scallions before. yay! my favorite color. :)

Is you cast produce local? We got our first box yesterday and had produce from equador. That kind of shocked me!

yep – all of our csa produce is locally grown (on a farm about 20 minutes away!). that’s surprising that you got produce from equador! you should inquire about that…?

I agree, I was going to say how cool the purple scallions look. And purple carrots and potatoes are AWESOME!! Purple potatoes are my fave. And now I need to find the purple “green” beans! There’s something really cool about beautiful purple produce.

I’ve never heard of or seen purple basil but I’m intrigued! You could make a really yummy, colorful caprese salad with the purple and green basil, tomatoes, mozzarella and throw it all on the bed of lettuce! Or make a combo caprese/nicoise salad and add the green beans! Yum! Colors of summer.

Purple Basil sounds SOooo delicious. The entire Farmers Market today smelled amazingly like Basil, so for that alone your box sounds awesome!
