if you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, you might remember that jake is a bit of a mystery dog.
we adopted him from a rescue organization, so we don’t know what kind of dog he is. all of the puppies in his litter look completely different, so we know he is a crazy mix of mutt.
we always assumed that he was most lab with maybe some kind boxer/bulldog/pit and maybe a little bit of italian greyhound since he’s so lean and speedy!
i recently saw on the rescue organization’s facebook wall that someone who adopted one of his sisters (and litter-mate) had gotten a breed test done on their dog’s dna.
she told us the results for her dog and we were shocked. (and i’ll admit that i don’t believe this is jake’s genetic make-up…)
according to the dna results, her dog is:
- 50% jack russell terrier
- 12% dachshund
- 12% shih tzu
- less than 5% miniature poodle, bulldog, cesky terrier, golden retreiver, and glen of imaal terrier
but so many of those are little dogs & jake is over 50 lbs! i can see the jack russell terrier, though – jake has a ridiculous amount of energy!
i know that different dogs within a litter can have different genetic make-up, but if the pups have the same father, then jake should be a combination of those breeds too!
we love him no matter what breed he actually is, but now i really want to get one of the dna kits to test him for ourselves!
