the day of tea

by Sarah Zinkel on February 15, 2012

i caught myself thinking that it was wednesday several times yesterday, so i am extra grateful for the arrival of wednesday this week!

per usual, i am linking up with jenn’s what i ate wednesday party, but i thought i’d throw in a little twist this week by adding a little “day in the life” action. i’ll still share mostly food, but a couple more details that usually get left out.

i took all of these pictures on monday, my work-at-home day.

6:00 – my alarm goes off for the first time. i silence it, take my temperature, and roll over to snooze for another half hour.

6:30 – finally get up, take the dogs outside, feed them, take them out again, and pour myself some coffee.

7:00 – sit down at computer, check/update my to-do list for the day, check email, read some blogs, open up necessary documents to work on my final paper revisions/data checking, work for a while

8:30 – breakfast time!

20120214-wiaw - breakfast

i had an apple & cinnamon chobani with granola, coffee, water, and kombucha. as you can see, i worked on this week’s meal plan while i was eating breakfast.

after finishing my yogurt, i realized that wasn’t enough to eat and went back for a blood orange.

20120214-wiaw - breakfast 2

with a coffee refill and my vitamins.

9:00-11:00 – done with breakfast. i throw the last load of laundry that carried over from sunday into the dryer and get back to work on my edits

11:00 – edits are looking good but i need to double check some data. i hold off on the data and go wake up brad (oh yeah, he’s been home & sleeping this whole time – mondays are his day off). he had a lunch meeting on monday, so he needed to get up and get ready! while he was getting ready, i refreshed myself on the data and what i did for the analysis.

11:50 – brad leaves to go to his meeting and i decide i should start getting my lunch ready. before plating my lunch (a grain salad that i made the night before), i decide to stage and photograph it for the blog since the lunchtime light is great! also photograph the brownies that i showed you yesterday.

12:30-1:15 – done with pictures and it’s time to eat!

20120213-2012-02-13 047

lunch was a grain salad (recipe coming soon) on top of a huge pile of spinach and the first tea of the day (this one was yogi tea – tahitian hazelnut).

i ate lunch on the couch while watching project runway from last week.

20120213-2012-02-13 049

(yep, i was still in my sweatpants – i love work at home days!)

and for dessert i ate some little brownie scraps.

20120213-2012-02-13 064

so perfectly under baked…delicious!

1:15-3:00 – back at my desk and finishing up the data checking. my paper is ready to be formatted for submission! during this time i also have some more tea…

20120213-2012-02-13 050

i don’t even know what kind it was this time.

3:00-5:00 – random hours. brad gets home from his meeting, i finally shower and run to the post office to mail this month’s foodie penpal package. i think about working out, but i just showered and my abs are killing me from sunday. i fold laundry instead.

20120213-2012-02-13 071

and laugh at brad’s shirts…

20120213-2012-02-13 080

guess what his favorite color is…

i watch the dogs play together outside for a while.

20120213-2012-02-13 073

here’s jake biting capone’s leg.

so glad i captured that on film my memory card.

5:00-6:30 – work on some iin stuff. lots of listening to lectures and reading chapters. time flew during this hour and a half and i ended up starting dinner 30 minutes late because i was so caught up.

20120213-2012-02-13 067

of course i had more tea while i was working. this time i was some new-to-me jasmine tea from the bulk bins at the co-op. this stuff is pretty wonderful, but it’s going to have to be a treat. that bag has not much in it, but it was almost $5! that’s what i get for choosing the tea that’s $140/lb! eek.

6:30-7:30 – cook dinner and do random cleaning chores while it’s cooking: put away dishes, wash dishes, put away laundry, go through mail, etc.

7:30 – eat dinner!

20120215-wiaw- dinner

i made the soup mix that darlynn sent me last month for foodie penpals! in the spirit of veggie month for wiaw, i added in a couple extra veggies to the mix! the soup is definitely not healthy – lots of half and half in there – but it sure is comforting! i had a small portion then filled my plate with so.many.brussels.sprouts. and some easy baked risotto.

8:30-9:45 – brad does the dishes (wonderful husband) and i hop on the computer to check email, read blogs, edit photos from the day, and start thinking about my blog post for tuesday morning.

9:45 – get ready for bed (yes, i’m a grandma).

asleep by 10:30.

whew! you get a cookie if you read through all of that.

i love my work at home days! since i can structure them however i want, i tend to get my blog reading & other busy work done in efficient chunks of time and then do a good job of putting in solid chunks of time working. when i’m in the lab i definitely tend to work for 10 minutes, then check email, then walk down to fill up my water bottle, then work for a couple more minutes, then read a blog, etc… it’s not a nearly as efficient use of my time. i should try to work on that…

*****

do you have the opportunity to work from home at all?

how are your at-home days different than your at-work ones?

i know it’s kind of counter-intuitive that i’m more productive at home, but that’s what works for me, i guess!

I will have less working at home now but my days really seem to vary so far. Meetings, lots of tea/water/snacks, some computer time and usually that is my day.

i think i’d like a little more variety to my schedule. when i work in the lab, it’s mostly computer time with maybe a meeting or seminar per day. most days i don’t have anything scheduled other than sitting at my computer. it gets old so fast and i end up being so so so unproductive. i need a little more stimulation in my days!

Sounds like a good Monday! I love that you drink so much tea! I drink one cup of coffee in the mornings at work and then tea and water all day long. I don’t get to work fro home :( I think some people are allowed to but for for my specific job, I have to be here :\

i drink coffee right away in the morning and then tea for the rest of the day too. monday was definitely an excessive amount of tea – but it’s so good! plus, i have about a million different kinds of tea in our pantry, so i didn’t repeat flavors once!

I work at a high school, so no work at home days for me, but between holidays & furlough days, I am getting a few days each month at home, which is nice!

that’s nice to get a couple days at home each month! i love the random days off when i can really clean the apartment well or catch up on non-work work. :)

On rare occasion I can work from home but I am really not very productive working at home, always thinking, Oh I should be doing dishes, laundry, etc.

i try to limit how much time i spend on non-work things during the work hours, but i definitely threw in a couple loads of laundry when i went to the kitchen to re-fill my water bottle or make tea. multi-tasking at its finest! :)

i just have to tell you – i love your photos. even of something simple like what you ate, I almost always say “nice picture” in my head as I read/scroll along.

i’m trying to be better about a)de-lurking and b) giving compliments when I think them, even if they seem trivial – so I knew I had to tell you!

brad and i use the fertility awareness method for birth control & part of it is taking your temp every morning at the same time each day.

Work at home days are definitely my most productive. I get to work without distraction, and it makes it easy for me to workout during lunch. The midday workout keep me feeling so much more alert through the afternoon!

I never get to work from home, but I don’t mind. I don’t think I could get anything done if I had to work from home! It would make lunch and workout time much easier, though!

Do you practice the FAM method? I’m reading a book about that now and am very intrigued! I worked from home for around 7 years as a medical transcriptionist and pretty much loved it. I can work from home occasionally with my job now, but I prefer to be in the office… it’s just easier! :)

yes! we use FAM. :) i really liked the book that i read about it. i learned SO MUCH.

my mom was a medical transcriptionist when i was growing up! now she still works as a supervisor of transcriptionists. but it’s becoming an extinct profession with voice recognition and all that stuff now…

Yeah, I’m reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility right now, and I plan to stop the Pill when my pack is up in a week and start charting. SO sick of hormones, but definitely not ready for a baby, so I’m pretty stoked about giving this a shot.

I actually work in the transcription office as an office coordinator now (my day job, hoping to be a full-time massage therapist one day!), and it is definitely a profession that is going by the wayside. We have lost HUGE clients to VR, but we were purchased by a larger company back in April who dabbles in VR, so I’ve still got a job, for a little while anyway! ;)

that is literally almost the exact same position my mom is in (minus the massage therapist part). she works for a hospital but they keep restructuring their transcription departments. now she’s 1 of 4 (i think) supervisors covering all of the hospital/clinics from this organization for in the whole state. it’s crazy. they just keep cutting back more & more on transcriptionists, so they need fewer & fewer supervisors.

that’s why i ended up going off the pill too. it worked well for me for almost 10 years, but this past summer i started getting crazy awful breakouts on my jawline (like really bad worse-than-teenage-acne breakouts), which i’m still trying to get back under control, and started having really bad spotting (tmi? sorry…). but yeah. i’m happy with it so far & feel much more connected and in tune with my body.

and yeah, it’s not baby-making time here yet, so we are being extra extra careful w/ this method!
