shopping from around the globe

by Sarah Zinkel on October 7, 2012

part of my “saying no more” change of approach to life (including my blog) included backing off from product reviews. however, when i was approached about checking out novica and choosing a couple items from the site, i couldn’t say no.

their mission is to connect artisans with consumers from around the world. they are all about knowing where your products come from. i ordered from two different sellers – one from guatemala and one from india.

the site was really easy to navigate. they offer all kinds of products, home goods, clothing, jewelry, art, and more! i was drawn to the accessories and i had a really hard time choosing my items.

i eventually chose a scarf from an artisan in india. it arrived with a post card from the maker, and a description of the item i purchased.

novica

black houndstooth – woven by hand on a traditional loom, white and black cotton combine in a classic scarf from jaskaran. textured motifs define stripes, and zigzags and a houndstooth check pattern”

novica - black & white scarf

the verdict? it’s pretty great. i really like square scarfs and the patterns on this one are really unique!

the other items i chose were these little pouches made in guatemala of recycled materials.

novica - recycled pouches

inspired by environmental concerns, patrizia elisabetta designs these trendy cosmetic bags. one is crafted in gray cotton, the other one in red, and both are lined in red cotton. they are adorned with caucho that has been recycled from bicycle tires.”

i love having little pouches like these around. i use them for odds & ends in my purse, business cards, spare change, coupons, pretty much everything!

also, see that little doll? it was included in the package with my pouches with a little note:

“ever lost sleep over worry or sorrow? you may want to try telling the worry doll about it – know as “muneca quita penas,” this little cloth doll has been around since the time of the maya. all you need to do is tell it what is worrying you, then place the worry doll under your pillow. according to ancient maya tradition, the doll will deal with your worries and let you have a good night’s sleep. why not try it?”

isn’t that cute? maybe i’ll try it tonight! :)

i hope you’ll consider visiting novica’s website and supporting one of their artisans from around the world.

right now, they are featuring some specific accessories: peruvian necklaces, silver cocktail rings, batik shirts, women’s clothing, capri pants, men’s clothing from indonesia

full disclosure: i was provided with a gift card from novica to choose some products and test out their website. as always, all opinions expressed on the blog are my own.
