my favorite run

by Sarah Zinkel on June 5, 2012

oh hi there!

i can’t believe today is only tuesday. i feel like so much has happened already this week that we can’t possibly be only one day in. but of course, that’s how it is i guess!

i had a fabulous weekend with  my sister here & at the wedding, and it’s definitely my plan to get around to recapping all of that, but today i have to tell you about a run.

i’m still going strong with the runner’s world summer running streak! honestly, i kind of love having that mile to run each day. it gets the blood pumping and i feel accomplished each time i can check off a day.

on saturday morning, liz and i made plans to get in a 5-mile run before we got ready for the wedding. i only had 4 miles on my training plan, but 5 sounded better for liz, so we mapped out a route friday night and headed out on saturday morning with jake.

i knew it was going to be rough immediately. my calves were so so so sore all last week after i ran my 3-mile run in my old running shoes (stupid stupid stupid). i was walking like an old grandma and foam rolling like crazy, but i couldn’t stretch those calves out. anyway, the run was rough. my stomach also started acting up. i wasn’t able to go to the bathroom before we left and i thought that maybe since i hadn’t had any coffee yet, i’d be fine. wrong.

we ended up detouring to find a public restroom.

oh yeah, and jake was being a little punk.

he has never run with me and another person before and he was still a little leery of liz anyway, so he was not being good about running in front of us and keeping up his pace. he kept checking liz out to make sure she wasn’t causing trouble or anything.

anyway, we cut the run to 4.2 miles in 53 minutes (including walking breaks and restroom visits…) and called it a day.

and you know what? looking back, running with my sister was one of my favorite parts of the weekend!

liz is definitely a better runner than me and in much better shape than i am, so she really encouraged me on the run and kept me going! i’m sure i would have ended up walking waaaayyyy more than i did or even cutting the run short if she hadn’t been with me.

after the run, liz took me through a 10-minute yoga for runners’ and holy cow! it definitely showed me that i must must must stretch more often. it felt amazing! this is the routine we followed in case you’re interested. it was glorious.

oh yeah, and jake did eventually warm up to liz.

and capone really was happy to see his aunt lizzy!

she was his favorite when she lived with us last summer! she’d play with him and get his butt wiggling so fast he’d get so excited! :)

……..

i’ve got lots of things to check off of my to-do list today, so i better get to it!

have a good day!

……..

who is your favorite running/workout buddy?

normally, jake and capone are my only running buddies, but it was so much fun having liz to run with!

OMG! You and your sister are just adorable! I wish I could run with my sister. She has a horrible back injury now so she’s off running for a least a year :( but when she was hardcore about running, I didn’t want to do it so it’s like we missed our chance :\ Oh well. I haven’t run in weeks! HORRIBLE. But with this stupid move and stress of packing and everything, my life is revolving around (I know, I know – woe is me lol). But once we’re moved in, I’m stoked to map a new run in the new neighborhood! I love running any where that isn’t near traffic. I HATE waiting for crosswalk signals and running in place. Feels like I get de-motivated easier. I love working out with my hubby. He’s a great trainer!

oh no!! :( poor your sister. being injured blows. is that why you inherited her garmin temporarily?!

i saw that you ran again yesterday (? the day before?) – nice job getting back into it! it’s not like you’ve been busy buying a house/moving or anything…

Yup, that’s why she let me borrow the garmin :) Although the battery doesn’t like staying charged for more than a day. I did run yesterday! The hubs ran with me too (although I’m sure his pace was 847483 times slower than his usual pace lol), but we did around 3 miles! Felt good. Determined to get back into it :) I think after the big move this weekend (doing the furniture this Sat!) I’ll feel less stressed about the move and can focus back on living healthy!

Thanks for the link to the yoga video – that’ll come in really useful to me!

In response to your questions, however antisocial it sounds, I just have to run on my own with headphones on! It’s my ‘me-time’!
