brad and i have been busy busy busy working on the house lately and i am way overdue on showing you some of our progress!
we’ve actually had the master bedroom in pretty good shape for almost two weeks now!
if you recall, this is what it looked like on closing day (july 27):
so much red! gah. not our style…
and then while it was being primed/we chose paint colors:
(we chose the bottom color.)
during painting:
(this was when we realized the ceiling was painted a tan/yellow color and we’d also have to paint it white! ughhh…. thanks to brad’s dad for painting the ceiling!)
and now!
i love it!
we painted the walls dark pewter by behr and used behr premium plus paint with primer in it. we primed the walls before painting and then one coat of the paint/primer combo gave great coverage over that red! (i had a really hard time capturing the actual color of the walls in these photos. it’s a dark grey with just a hint of blue.)
that’s our same queen bed that we had at our apartment, but we got a new duvet cover for it from ikea – the färglav duvet cover w/ pillowcases. it’s reversible and i really liked the white side up with the grey stripe!
the nightstands are also from ikea – the malm chest with 2 drawers in black/brown.
the teal honeycomb lamps are from pier 1 – i had to have them as soon as i saw them! i also got the two accent pillows at pier 1. i think this is the blue one (it was on sale!) and the white one was on clearance (i can’t find it on the website anymore) because a little button on the end was loose, but i fixed that right up and it’s good as new!
we also made our closets a little more functional by finding dressers that fit in each one.
my closet had two extra shelves in the far corner that we removed so i would have room to hang my shoes and my clothes.
i got the brimnes 3 drawer chest for my dresser. i didn’t want it to be too tall because i was planning on hanging my jewelry and headbands, etc. above it.
i was able to fit all of my clothes in there with plenty of extra room!
i struggled a little to squeeze all of my tops & dresses in the space i have for hanging, but i ended up getting rid of a couple things that i never wore and i’ll have to hang my wedding dress & some dressy clothes that i don’t wear often in the office closet. that should work out just fine!
you can also see in the first closet photo that i’ve got all of my jeans, shorts, sweatshirts, scarves, and purses stacked on the shelf above the hanging bar. that’s working well. it works better when i’m carrying my big grey epiphanie bag and it doesn’t have to be stacked up on top of everything else!
we’ve also got our dirty clothes hamper (that big green & tan checkered basket) on the floor in my closet since i have more floor space than brad and most of my shoes are hanging in the shoe organizers!
speaking of brad’s closet space…
his closet is a bit skinnier than mine, so we got him the tall & skinny brimnes 4 drawer chest. it fits in his closet perfectly!
he had no problem fitting all of his clothes that he needs to hang up –> work clothes on the top right, polo shirts on the bottom right, and other miscellaneous shirts on the left.
his shoes are on the floor in his closet & he’s got shorts/jeans on his shelves.
he has more clothes than me though (he had 4 drawers in our old dresser & i only had 2!), so a few of his rarely worn t-shirts are in a plastic bin under the bed. i bet he will never pull it out to wear any of those shirts…
and that’s our master bedroom!
oh yeah, the master bathroom (aka brad’s bathroom) is off of the master bedroom. it’s a pretty standard bathroom that we haven’t really done anything to, but it’s capone’s new favorite spot.
i got another photo of him just chilling in the shower while i was taking these photos yesterday. he is such a silly dog!
so we’ve still got some things to add to the room. we need to hang some stuff on the walls asap, i’d like to add another accent color – i’m thinking pops of bright yellow (?), and down the line i would LOVE to replace the ceiling fan and maybe even be able to replace the carpet with hard wood floors.
it definitely works for now, though!
…………………………….
what color are the walls in your bedroom?
it’s so nice to be able to paint this house whatever colors we want! i’ve lived with white walls for the past 8 years –> 4 years in college dorms/apartments and then 4 more years in grad school apartments!
when i was growing up, my parents were pretty cool about letting us do fun stuff with our bedrooms. at one point my walls were sponge painted with two different shades of pink and a light green. after i was over the sponge paints, i think i had 4 different colors on my walls at one time – lime green, orange, bright blue, and maybe purple? ugh. that must have been awful to paint over…

I love the new color and think it goes fantastically well with your bright white bedding (I will only sleep on white because I apparently think I’m a princess or something).
I’m currently living in an apartment and the walls are painted a creamy faintly yellow color. Its warmer than most apartments with white walls, so not complaints here.
And again, congrats on the house! Cannot wait to see more progress photos!

I love lamp!
No really, I love those lamps. We desperately need bedside lamps for our bedroom (at Nik’s)! I haven’t really started looking yet though.

We’re renting so we have white walls right now
Can’t wait to paint a home eventually… grey is on our short list, for pretty much ALL rooms!
