full disclosure: we paid for this meal with our own money and i was in no way compensated for this blog post. the opinions are entirely my own.
on saturday morning, brad and i got up early (for a weekend) at 7am and got ready for our day. i got another adjustment first.
and then we went for breakfast at french gourmet bakery & cafe. we’d been here before with my aunt & uncle and LOVED it. it’s near brad’s clinic, so we knew we’d be back.
the first thing you see when you walk in is their massive pastry display case. they have lots of cakes, mini desserts, cookies, canolis, cupcakes, even some flourless cakes for their gluten free friends. (i really wish i had a photo to share, but there was someone behind the counter helping us the first time and i felt weird taking a pic).
we waited on the desert on saturday and ordered breakfast, first. you order at the counter here, so while we were waiting for our food we took in the sights. i really like how they have it decorated. plus, they just redecorated and added a bar area. they are planning to become oak barrel american bistro and artisan bakery soon with a bar and dinner options. very cool!
while we were waiting the owner brought us over some baguette slices to try. they’re thinking of changing up their recipe and wanted our opinions.
it was a blind taste test and brad and i both said we like the “small loaf” better. it was doughier and very crusty! mmm. we were thorough testers.
it turned out that the “small loaf” is their new version of the recipe. they don’t know if they’ll change yet, but even if they don’t – both versions were delicious!
our food arrived really quickly – a perk of coming for “breakfast” at 11am! i got the jardin omelette made with zucchini, red peppers, onions, and swiss cheese. the omelette was perfect. i like veggie omelettes and the flavors in this one are some of my favorites. plus, it had swiss cheese and how can you not like that? it was served with 2 slices of toast and a cute little strawberry.
daily coffee fix. i tried their pumpkin flavor (trying to use it up after the holidays?). it was ok. a little too sweet for me though. i also wish they gave me a real coffee cup to reduce waste – were were eating there after all!
brad felt like getting lunch, apparently, and ordered the french club sandwich. it was heavy on the meat – ham, turkey, roast beef, and bacon. served warm with onions and garlic mayo. i took a couple bites and it was very good. you could really taste the bacon. he got a broccoli salad on the side, which i am going to attempt to recreate soon.
we both cleaned our plates!
then it was time for dessert. i quickly made up my mind: a mini raspberry cheesecake bite.
and brad tried the flourless chocolate surprise cake.
we got them to go and enjoyed them at brad’s house a couple hours later.
wow. both deserts were delicious!
brad’s cake had a ganache filling. so good! and my raspberry cheesecake square was covered in chocolate goodness. i loved the pink piping on the top too. so cute!
this place scored high with us. on taste we give them an A. they’re moderately priced, but it’s worth it in our opinion. on cost they get a A- (our breakfast was $18 and the desserts were another $5). i will highly recommend french gourmet bakery & cafe to anyone in the st. louis area.
for my holiday today, i’ll be getting one more adjustment at brad’s clinic, then heading back up to madison. i’m house-sitting for a friend for the next 3 days, so i get to go to her nice big house instead of my teeny apartment. yay!
