don’t worry, i’m not going to start preaching to you about how grains are awful. i’m not going to do it, because i don’t believe it.

i do believe that everyone has a different diet that works best for them and that i haven’t found mine yet in my 26 years. it’s sad, really.

anyway, i mentioned recently that brad and i have been trying to cut out grains in general from our diet to see how we (ok i – brad hasn’t been feeling badly) feel.

so, for this week’s what i ate wednesday, i’ll show you what my diet has been looking like lately. (here’s a hint –> lots of fruit, veggies, eggs, greek yogurt, beans, sweet potatoes, and meat….)

lots of fresh berries and greek yogurt around here. this one had a drizzle of agave mixed in too!

breakfast - greek yogurt, agave, fresh blueberries and raspberries

and a packed breakfast eaten in lab recently:

breakfast - cottage cheese, maple syrup, fresh raspberries

cottage cheese, fresh driscoll’s raspberries, and a drizzle of pure canadian maple syrup!

sometimes i have an egg or two with breakfast and a smaller serving of the yogurt. i mix it up & haven’t felt bored with it yet! and i’m not missing my oats… *shocking*


i’ve been having a lot of fun with lunches lately!

sweet potatoes have been making a lot of appearances.

i couldn’t make a decision on toppings, so this one has some garlic eggplant spread on one half and some sharp cheddar, salsa, and a dollop of plain yogurt on the other half.

snacky lunches have also been happening.

snack lunch - peppers and mushrooms and spicy greek yogurt dip + seaweed salad

this one had cut up red peppers and portobello mushrooms to dip in this spicy jalapeno greek yogurt dip and a side of costco seaweed salad. so tasty!

all served up with my vitamins.

side note: remember how i thought it was my multi vitamin that was making me sick? yeah, so definitely not that. i started having even worse stomach problems after i stopped taking them, so i’m back on all of my supplements.


i’ve been having lots of raw veggies snacks after stocking up at costco and getting some great csa veggies!

thank goodness for dark chocolate.


dinners have been simple, yet out of my comfort zone lately. that’s mostly because we’ve been eating more meat, which i just don’t usually cook.

brad grilled steaks the other night while i made a great veggie mix.

veggies included: red peppers, zucchini, red onions, garlic, portobello mushrooms, and a big pile of sautéed kale on the bottom!

also, any time we go out for dinner and i’m doing something different with my diet, i get all concerned about what i’m going to order.

thankfully, buck & honey’s came through for us! :)

i got cedar plank salmon with a side of the steamed veggie of the day (zucchini, squash, and peppers) and mushrooms & onions as my other side.

it was so delicious and totally something i would have ordered even if i wasn’t avoiding grains!


whew! this is a novel and i still haven’t told you about fitness!

my biggest recent fitness accomplishment?

actually making it to my gym and doing strength training! it’s been a while..


i hope your day is off to a good start! i was feeling a little sleepy this morning – i stayed up too late reading last night.

but i’m organizing my to-do list for the day and getting ready to have a productive day!

Good for you, Sarah!! All those meals sound great and it doesn’t sound like you’ve been missing the grains too much. Raw and grilled veggies are a staple for us, especially during the summer months!
I don’t know if I have a lot of grain free recipes, but I do have this recipe for stuffed peppers:
You could just leave out the rice and stuff it more with meat/boca and veggies!

i’m actually shocked at how little i’m missing the grains. thanks for passing on that recipe! i just bought 6 red bell peppers and i was thinking about stuffing some of them! :)

Grain-free is a hard one, but after you get into the habit anything become easier. I just tried out paleo oats for the first time are really loved them!

I can’t wait to hear how this is going for you!!! I wish I could avoid carbs, especially processed ones. I am just not a very adventurous eater! And I was super tired today too… I slept an hour and a half past my alarm! Whoops!

i’m surprised at how easy it’s been to avoid carbs. i have slipped up a couple times – like ordering my ice cream in a cone without even thinking about it – but for the most part, haven’t had any problems!

i am definitely an adventurous eater though. there’s not much i don’t like.

WAY TO GO getting to the gym!

i have been trying to add more strength training to my weeks as of late. Monday night was TOTALLY fitness central over at my apartment. I did 35 minutes of upper body, 12 minutes of core work, a 1 mile walk, and 3 mile run while Nick rode his bike.

And last night while getting ready for date night I realized that it hurt SO MUCH to try to pull shirts/dresses over my head :) Sign of a successful shoulder workout, right?

I don’t think I could totally cut out grains but I’ve found that when I’m focused on loading up on fruits and veggies, I don’t eat as many grains. I’m usually content without them. That said, I don’t think I could totally cut them out!

Good luck with cutting out the grains! I’ve recently been flirting with the idea of trying the Paleo diet, so I’ve been trying to cut them out too as a 1st step. And it has been a little tough coming up with new meal ideas – I never realized how many time I actually consume them throughout a day.

Lately I’ve been baking muffins grain-free (no reason, just trying out some subs) and using hemp protein powder in place of the flour. I’ve been just throwing goodies into a bowl–I can work on a recipe for you.

Oh my goodness that salmon looks to die for! As does your veggie mix and sweet potato- I love getting creative with the toppings:) My current favorite is coconut oil and almond butter along with a bit of cinnamon
