dairy free living, so far

by Sarah Zinkel on June 18, 2012

good morning, friends!

how does everyone’s monday look? mine’s not too bad. i have lots of work (from home!) planned and then another big (big!) appointment this evening. cross your fingers for us, we’re a little worried about this one…

moving on.

i wanted to give a quick update today on how my dairy elimination is going so far.

overall, things are good. my skin is looking decent. as i mentioned before, i definitely see hormonal fluctuations in the degree of my acne, so i’m probably going to eliminate diary for a while longer before i start adding things back in to try to really figure out if dairy has an impact.

as far as what i’ve been eating, i think i’ve been doing a really good job of avoiding dairy. there have been a few times where i’ve eaten something that has dairy in it out of habit and only realized it afterward. like on saturday when i had one of my favorite coffee drinks and then realized that it has skim milk in it… oops. but overall, my diet has been pretty clean. it’s certainly a departure from my normal though.

for example:

dinner at chipotle, which usually includes both cheese and a little sour cream on the burrito bowl…

instead i got guac and extra salsa!

also, i’ve been avoiding my favorite lattes at starbucks because their only dairy free milk option is soy and i try not to consume too many non-traditional soy foods.

instead i’ve been loving the green and passion tea!

desserts have been a struggle for me too. i really like having a little something sweet in the evenings every now and then. friday night, the craving wasn’t too strong, so i went with some sweet cherries and they hit the spot!

but last night i was going crazy for a treat. i checked the nutella label. nope. it has skim milk. i peeked in the freezer and only saw regular vanilla ice cream. not gonna work. then i remembered a package of dark chocolate m&m’s in the cabinet. nope. they also have milk!

it got to the point where brad asked if i wanted him to go get me something from the store! haha (good husband right there!).

but before it got that far, i broke into this dark chocolate bar (no dairy!), broke off a square, and dipped it in cinnamon almond butter.

ahhhhhh. seriously, so much better. :)

so, it hasn’t been a 100% smooth transition and sometimes i crave cheese/yogurt/ice cream like crazy, but i think the dairy elimination is going well so far!

………………..

i hope you all have a great day!

if you eat dairy, what would be the hardest thing for you to give up?

I’m glad its going well! I think guac is 100x better than sour cream anyway. :)

Have you tried Coconut milk ice cream? We tried it when we decided to go vegan for like 12 hours (haha) and it was phenomenal!!!! It’s not really any healthier than normal ice cream but it’s 100% dairy free, and not soy. I would be easily able to do dairy free due to almond milk and stuff like that, EXCEPT FOR CHEESE. I love me some cheese, and there are no good substitutes (that I know of) like there are for milk. The only real thing you need cheese for is pizza… have you figured out a way to break that craving? Or are you not pizza obsessed like me? :)

Good job on sticking with it, I know it can be really hard! I don’t drink a lot of milk but cheese would so hard to give up.

Now I’m hardcore craving chipotle!!! haha Guac and extra salsa is my go-to order, too!

I don’t generally have a lot of dairy, but I don’t completely avoid it. Especially greek yogurt… haha

Loving the cherries right now!

It is insane to think about all the foods that have dairy in them! I’m afraid is fail miserably if I had to give up dairy just because of the thinking involved!

I also gave up dairy about 3 months ago and while it’s difficult sometimes, it’s definitely worth it! Dairy is not very healthy for people!

When I had to give up dairy for a week, I craved half and half in my coffee and greek yogurt so badly! Oh and cheese was so hard to stay away from! Good luck. Is this to see if your stomach gets better? I want to take the lactose intolerance test that my doc told me about to see if I have any sensitivity at all to lactose.

Good job so far on the non-dairy lifestyle! Seems like you’re getting into a groove that will work! Keep it up! I voluntarily try to avoid cheese just because I know how many more calories a meal ends up having with the addition of it. So when I get salads or veggie burgers, I get them sans cheese. Cheese in general would be hard to give up though, because when I do have cravings, that’s normally what I eat. Or yogurt. Soy isn’t so bad though! I love Silk light and prefer soy milk to regular milk. when i do cheese it’s in the form of light string cheese or cottage cheese these days.

If I found out I couldn’t eat dairy I’d be in a lot of trouble, as I already can’t have soy or gluten. I’d be fine with milk because I love almond milk, but I’d be a bit stuck when it came to cheese and yogurt – which are a staple in my diet.
