beat the heat in the garden

by Sarah Zinkel on May 8, 2013

whew! did anyone else miss spring?!

i swear, wisconsin went from winter to summer in about a week!

wisconsin "spring"

i’m happy for some warmer weather, but this heat wave has made the process of getting our garden started and doing yard work a bit sweatier than usual.

speaking of yard work, apparently being a home-owner is a lot of work. (who knew?!)

i had grand intentions last weekend to spend all day sunday outside, doing minor spring clean-up in the yard and getting my garden ready for planting…

hah! not even close. in reality, i spent 4 hours in our front yard weeding our landscaped beds, cleaning out old dead leaves/brush, and just barely making a dent in my garden.

i was so frustrated! i really wanted to make some major progress in this mess of our garden.

the garden - before

unfortunately, the “after” looks remarkably similar to this “before” shot minus all of the debris (all left by the previous owners of our house…).

one of the bright spots in my grueling day of yard work?

my new duluth trading co gardening clothes!

gardening in duluth trading co clothes

duluth trading co sent me their plaid armachillo work shirt and their heirloom gardening capri pants to try out.

previously, my gardening clothes always consisted of my old holey jeans and a cotton t-shirt. i’ve got to say, having the proper attire makes an amazing difference! duluth trading’s summer solved collection is designed to be worn in hot weather. the work shirt (tested in texas humidity!), was very breathable and helped to keep me cool while i was out in the sun all day. it worked much better than a cotton t-shirt that sticks to you as soon as you begin sweating! the capri pants were great too – they were definitely easier to move in than my old jeans – especially when i started working up a sweat!

i am really happy with the clothes that i got to try – i only wish i had ordered a smaller size for the pants. the ones i received worked fine because they have an elastic waist with a built-in belt, so i could tighten them to fit, but you can see in the photo above that they’re a bit big.

overall, i really like both items of gardening clothes from duluth trading. i don’t think i’ll ever be able to go back to gardening in my jeans & t-shirt!

to celebrate spring, gardening, and cute clothes, duluth trading has offered to let me give away one $50 gift card to try out some of their products for yourself.

to enter the giveaway, comment on this post and tell me what one food item is at the top of your list to grow in your garden? mine is asparagus. i don’t think i’ll have our gardening bed ready to plant it this year, but i’m going to get it started next year for sure!

for another entry, visit duluth trading co’s website and tell me which item you would use your gift card toward.

i will announce the winner on friday – good luck!
