wholesome harvest spring share

by Sarah Zinkel on May 10, 2012

tuesday afternoon brought about something that i have been looking forward to for a couple of months –> csa season!

brad and i didn’t get a csa last year, but i had one the year before that and loved it! i knew we were going to sign up again this year.

we decided to get our csa through wholesome harvest, a farm near fort atkinson, wi. their csa shares are a fairly new venture for the farm – only 6 years old – but they had a convenient pick-up time and location for us and i had a good recommendation.

we decided to start our csa a month early with their spring share, which includes some earlier crops that are sometimes left out of the normal shares.

i was so excited to pick up our box of goodies tuesday afternoon!

see all of those green peeking out?!?

csa box - tuesday 5.8.12

i’m sure my neighbors thought i was a little crazy, but i unpacked my box right on our porch and set out everything on the patio table and starting taking about a million photos of it…csa box - wholesome harvest - tuesday 5.8.12 csa veggies from wholesome harvest - 5.8.12 csa - leeks - 5.8.12 csa veggies - 5.8.12csa veggies - wholesom harvest - 5.8.12 csa - asparagus - 5.8.12 bok choy - csa - 5.8.12

in our first box:

  • bok choy
  • asparagus
  • red leaf lettuce (not sure what it’s actual name is…)
  • another type of green lettuce – not sure what kind
  • rhubarb
  • leeks
  • cilantro

guys. i could hardly contain myself!

i immediately started washing and ripping up the red lettuce to make a salad.

csa lettuce in salad spinner

in the old salad spinner!

that was a huge head of lettuce. we ended up getting 6 very very big salads out of it! that’s only half of it in the salad spinner. i had to do it in batches!

we also ate the asparagus for dinner that night too. of course. asparagus doesn’t last very long at our house! :)

i’m guest posting over at badger girl learn to cook today about 3 of my favorite things in the whole world –> farmers markets, csa’s, and gardening!

if you have a second to click on over and show kimberly some love, that would be nice!

daily rambles

i can’t believe it’s already thursday! this week has flown by. i have to finish up a poster on my gardening project today so i can get it printed in time for a symposium on monday. i’ve also got a bit more work to get done on a data analysis that i need to finish by tomorrow, so it’s going to be a busy one!

also, random, but my calves are super sore today and all i did was take the dogs on a long walk yesterday. what is going one?!? i’m probably being paranoid, but i’m all worried that something is wrong. they didn’t hurt at all after monday’s blend 5k. delayed soreness from that?!? grr. i don’t like it.

have you ever participated in a csa program?

anyone else geek out about a box of vegetables like i do?
